Short, straight lashes are hard to curl and even harder to keep curled. Many mascaras weigh them down by lunch. Korean mascaras are known for light, fine formulas built for exactly this lash type, which makes sense: straight lashes are very common in Korea.
I’m Karen, a licensed esthetician in Seoul. I haven’t tried every mascara on this list myself, so the picks below are based on formulas, brush type and what real users report. If you’re shopping in Korea, you’ll find most of these at Olive Young, often with testers.
What to look for with short, straight lashes:
- A curl-holding (often waterproof) formula. Straight lashes drop fast with heavy, creamy formulas.
- A thin brush. It reaches the tiny lashes at the inner and outer corners.
- Light layers. Two thin coats hold a curl better than one thick one.
- Curl first. Use a lash curler, then mascara right away to lock it in.

How to keep a curl on straight lashes
Curl in steps. Clamp at the base, then the middle, then near the tips, for a natural lift instead of a sharp bend.
Apply mascara right after curling. The formula locks the curl before your lashes relax.
Wiggle at the root, then pull up. Most of the lift comes from the base.
Thin coats. Let each coat dry for a few seconds before the next.
Remove waterproof mascara gently. Use an oil cleanser or an eye makeup remover instead of rubbing.
Frequently asked questions
Which Korean mascara holds a curl best?
Waterproof, long-wear formulas usually hold a curl longest on straight lashes. CLIO Kill Lash Superproof is one of the best-known for this, and Etude Curl Fix is made specifically to fix a curl.
Is Korean mascara okay for sensitive eyes?
Many people with sensitive eyes do fine with Korean mascaras, but formulas differ. Patch test first, avoid rubbing when you remove waterproof mascara, and stop using it if your eyes get itchy or watery.
Why are Korean mascaras good for straight lashes?
Many are designed for lashes that are short, straight and hard to curl, so they focus on light, curl-holding, smudge-proof formulas.
Is waterproof mascara better for straight lashes?
Usually, yes. Waterproof and long-wear formulas tend to hold a curl longer. Just remove them gently at night.
