I’m Karen, a licensed esthetician living in Seoul. Walk into any Olive Young and you’ll see a whole wall of pink, purple and beige sunscreens with “tone-up” on the label. That’s Korean tone-up sunscreen, and if you’re not from Korea, it’s confusing. Is it sunscreen? Is it makeup?

Short answer: it’s a sunscreen with a soft tint that makes your skin look brighter and more even. I use it instead of makeup on days I don’t want to wear foundation. Here’s what tone-up actually does, what the pink, purple and beige ones are for, and the two I’ve used on my own face.

About my skin

Licensed esthetician. Combination skin, and pores are my biggest worry. My skin is very fair. I wear tone-up sunscreen as my “no-makeup makeup” on easy days.

If you only read one part, read this:

  • What it is: sunscreen + a sheer tint. It brightens and evens your tone, but it’s not foundation.
  • Pink adds a healthy flush, purple cancels yellowness, green calms redness, beige looks the most natural.
  • My favorite: ROUND LAB Birch Juice Tone-Up Sun Serum. Moist, natural, and the best at evening out my tone. A little pricey for the size.
  • Best value: Sikmulnara White Rice Tone Up Sun Cream. Cheap for the size and often on sale, but very dewy. If you have oily skin, skip it.
  • Want a bit of coverage too? BRINGGREEN Zinc Teca Phyto BB Sun spreads like a BB cream but feels lighter.
  • Deeper skin tone? Pick beige, use a thin layer, and test on your jaw first. Pink and white tone-ups can look ashy.

How I tested

  • I swatched each tone-up sunscreen on my hand at Olive Young in Seoul.
  • I compared the tint before and after blending, the finish and white cast.
  • I’m a licensed esthetician in Seoul. No brand paid me or sent me anything.

What is Korean tone-up sunscreen?

Tone-up sunscreen (톤업 선크림, ton-eop seon-keu-rim) is a regular sunscreen with a light tint mixed in. It doesn’t cover spots the way foundation does. Instead, it gives your whole face a brighter, more even look, like your skin on a good day.

In Korea, a lot of people wear it as “I’m not wearing makeup, but I look put together.” Students wear it, people wear it to the office, and I wear it on weekends or quick errands when I don’t want a full base.

Pink vs purple vs green vs beige: what each color does

This is the part that confuses people the most, so here’s how I explain it as an esthetician. Each tint uses color correcting:

  • Pink: adds a healthy, rosy flush. Good if your skin looks pale or tired.
  • Purple (lavender): cancels out yellowness and sallow tone, so skin looks clearer and brighter.
  • Green / mint: calms down redness, like around the nose or on the cheeks.
  • Beige: the most natural, closest to a light skin tint. The easiest one to wear.

Here’s what beige, pink and purple tone-ups looked like on my hand at Olive Young. You can really see the difference in tint:

How I use tone-up (instead of makeup)

On days I don’t want foundation, Korean tone-up sunscreen is my whole base. I put it on as the last step of my morning skincare, the same way I’d put on regular sunscreen, and that’s it. My skin looks brighter and more even, and I’m protected.

A few tips:

  • Use enough. Because it’s tinted, it’s tempting to use less so it doesn’t look heavy. But it’s still your sunscreen, so don’t skimp. (The American Academy of Dermatology has a simple guide on how to apply sunscreen.)
  • Blend it out to your jawline so there’s no line between your face and neck.
  • Vitamin C first: if you use vitamin C in the morning, tone-up goes on after it, as the last step. (Here’s when I use vitamin C.)
  • Reapplying: during the day, a sun stick is easier to put over tone-up than more cream. (Here are the Korean sun sticks I swatched.)
  • Cleansing: on tone-up days I just use my foam cleanser at night. If you use a heavier or water-resistant one, a cleansing oil or balm first helps.

1. ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturizing Tone-Up Sun Serum: my favorite

This is the tone-up I like the most. It’s moist too, but not too thin and not too heavy, which is exactly what I want. The tone-up looks natural: it brightens my face without that white, chalky look some tone-ups have.

Where it really wins is evening out my skin tone. Compared to Sikmulnara, it does a much better job making my face look even. The one downside: for the amount you get, it’s a bit more expensive.

2. Sikmulnara (식물나라) White Rice Bright Tone Up Moisture Sun Cream: the best value

This one is very thin and runny, and the finish is very dewy. On my skin it ends up shiny and a little sticky, so I find it easier to set it with a bit of powder. Honestly, if you have oily skin, I’d say don’t use this one at all.

What it has going for it is value. It’s cheap for the size, and in Korea it’s on sale all the time. If you have dry skin and want an easy, budget tone-up, it makes sense. (The tube in my photo is a Hello Kitty collab edition. The regular packaging looks different.)

3. Cell Fusion C Dark Spot Toning Sunscreen (“Pa-de-free”): closer to a BB cream

In Korea this one is sold as 파데프리 (pa-de-peu-ri), which means “foundation-free.” Don’t think of it as a normal tone-up sunscreen. The texture is basically a BB cream, so it gives more coverage than the others. If you want something that can actually replace a light base, this is the one to look at. Want even more coverage than this? That’s where a Korean cushion comes in (Korean cushions for oily skin).

Other tone-up sunscreens on the Olive Young shelf

The Korean tone-up sunscreen section at Olive Young is huge. These are a few more I looked at and swatched on my hand in store. I haven’t worn them for a full day, so I’m not ranking them:

goodal Heartleaf Soothing Tone Up Sun Cream

A pink tube from goodal’s heartleaf (soothing) line. On my hand it went on as a soft pink that blended out sheer.

numbuzin No.3 No Filter Tone-Up Sun Serum

Comes in two versions: 01 Blur (beige) and 02 Glow (pink). I swatched 01 Blur, and it’s clearly beige, closer to a light skin tint than a typical tone-up. If you don’t like the pink or white look, this is the kind to look for.

BRINGGREEN Zinc Teca Phyto BB Sun

Of everything I swatched, this one did the most “tone-up plus foundation” job. It spreads just like a BB cream, but it feels lighter than a real BB. If you want a decent tone-up and a little coverage in one step, this is the one I’d point you to.

Dewytree Urban Shade

Dewytree has a Pink Tone-up Calamine and a beige Blemish Cover Tone Fit, side by side. I didn’t swatch these, but it’s a good example of how one brand makes both a pink and a beige.

Korean tone-up sunscreen on medium and deeper skin tones

Most Korean tone-ups are made with fair to light skin in mind, so on medium or deeper skin they can look ashy or white. If that’s you:

  • Choose beige over pink or white tone-ups.
  • Use a thin layer and build up only if it blends in.
  • Test on your jawline in daylight before you commit.
  • If every tone-up looks gray on you, a regular untinted Korean sunscreen is the better choice. (Here are the Korean sunscreens I tested.)

Buying Korean tone-up sunscreen from abroad

Many Korean tone-ups are sold on Amazon, but not all of them, and some versions are Korea-only. Check the exact name and color (pink, purple, beige) before you buy, since brands often have several tone-ups that look alike.

Frequently asked questions

What does Korean tone-up sunscreen do?

It protects you from the sun and adds a sheer tint that brightens and evens your skin tone. It’s lighter than foundation.

Can Korean tone-up sunscreen replace makeup?

For me, on easy days, yes. That’s how I use it. It won’t cover spots like foundation, but it makes skin look more even.

Which color should I choose?

Pink for a healthy flush, purple to cancel yellowness, green for redness, beige for the most natural look.

Do I need to double cleanse?

I just use foam cleanser. For heavier or water-resistant tone-ups, start with a cleansing oil or balm.

My long-term opinion is only about the tone-ups I’ve used on my face (ROUND LAB and Sikmulnara). The others are based on in-store swatches. Everyone’s skin is different.
